Dumb things you used to do?

$

The other day, I was thinking about various dumb things that I have done on a rebreather over the years primarily due to the fact that I didn't know any better at the time or due to the fact that as a community we have become more knowledgable over the years about best practices.

So, here is my question: "What are some of the really dumb things you have done on a rebreather and lived to tell about it?"

I'll start off by saying that when I first started diving a Draeger Atlantis (predecessor to the Dolphin) back in 1994, we used to dump our partially used sorb out and store it in a zip lock bag until our next dive so that we didn't waste sorb with any time left on it! We actually did this for a few years until we learned that this wasn't a great idea! Unbelievably bad idea! Unfortunately, back in the early days of Atlantis/Dolphin diving, the instructors didn't know much more than the students about safe rebreather practices and there was very little quality control within the instructor core!

Since some maintenance in the factory I do have now the new battery box and asking me what kind of rechargebale battery I can use.
When looking in the bay I find rechargebale with a voltage of 3.0, 3.3 and 3.7 Volt.
Is there anybody out there willing to share his experience with rechargebales?
I would like to know which voltage I can use w/o causing a damage in the electronics.

I'd like to share a 'nice' experience I had last week while diving in Scapa Flow with you.

Last week I was up in Scapa with a small group of friends diving the WW1 wrecks and some deeper ones. All was going well until the very last dive. We planned to dive the HMS Strathgarry which lays in about 60 meters of water. I was diving an AP vision and my buddy a JJ-CCR. The rest of the group were OC divers.

Having the longest planned bottom time my buddy and I planned to dive in first, install the deco station (a strong currant can be running) and descend down to the wreck. The OC divers where to follow and being first in, last out we where to decouple the deco station as last up the line.

After doing my checks, we jumped into the water. Due to carrying a heavily weighted shot line for the deco station we did a quick bubble check and descended down to about 40 meters where we attached the deco station to the shotline. After attaching the line I noticed that my rebreather was hanging low on my back and down on one side. I use one quick release clip on a back-plate and harness construction and my first thought was that I'd broken the clip when I jumped in. After checking I found it was still in place.

By this time I was on the bottom at about 58 meters. I signed my buddy that I had a problem and asked him to take a look. He to looked at the clip but found no problem. He did however show me that the case was on crooked but not knowing my unit well enough couldn't specify the problem.

This was the moment I had to decide whether to bail out and terminate the dive or keep on going. The rebreather it's self was working fine and giving no problems. The cells where spot- on -They're N@90 :ignore: I decided to keep going. My decision was influenced by the fact that being the instructor I also wanted to keep an eye on the other OC divers during the dive.

So using one hand to pull the YBOD onto my back and keep it there I continued the dive. I had planned on filming the divers but thought that that might have been a little optimistic to handle.. even for me ;-)

The ascent up the line and the deco stops all went well. I tried to switch hands every few minutes so as not to get bubbles forming in my hands from clenching the unit. Upon exiting the water via the divers lift the unit nearly dropped of my back. Luckly one of the guys was there to lend a hand.

What had happened was that when I jumped into the water the area around where the bolts go into the plastic bit of the inspiration case had completely been torn out of the box. So basically my back plate and harness weren't holding the unit to my back, but the breathing hoses were all that held everything in place! Luckily I have a strong bite!

So the questions I have are: has anyone had similar experiences with the inspiration case? What would you have done in the my situation? And who's selling an alibox? ;-)

Regards, Levi

DUI CF200 drysuit, XL, very good condition - $550

Selling my DUI CF200 drysuit to hopefully help pay for my rebreather training this summer. It is in excellent condition and was still dry when I last dove it about a year ago. The suit was checked out by DUI 3 years ago and has heavy duty wrist seals and neoprene neck seal. It is an XL and fits someone approximately 5'-8" - 6', 225 lb to 260 lbs. For those unfamiliar with the CF200, it is made with DUI's proprietery compressed neoprene and is known as one of the toughest suits around. New they go for over $2000 and this one will easily last 10 more years with good care.

Asking $ 550

Robert

G'day all

Just ordered my first re-breather, rEvo III Micro FT. Been diving on and off for over 30 years, just returned from diving the Galapagos Islands aboard the Galapagos Sky and now it is time to join the Silent world of CCR.

Have a lot to learn, hopefully I am not too old and senile. ;-) Am looking at doing my training in Bali as it is too cold for me to train in the 12 degree waters of Melbourne Australia. lol

Regards,
Rob

"Remote" Second stages?

$

Has anyone experimented with mounting the second stage regulators remotely from the tanks on some kind of whip?

I'm thinking of mounting my first stages at the top of the unit for better trim, hose routing, access and protection but keeping the tanks inverted with taps at the bottom- this will mean the use of some DIN whips to join them (about 75cm long) in a suitable material to see regular salt water immersion.

Any suggestions for a source of such an item?

The 50 hours magic boundary

I guess that many of us got into diving rebreathers after diving OC Trimix (as I have diving into the 80m (240ft) to 90m (180ft) range)

After qualifying as an IANTD OPtima CCR diver I am at present limited to 48m (144ft) MOD. My next qualification (guess you call it Level 2) requires me to dive 50 hours on the unit before advancing into the 'OC Normoxic' Range. (50m to 60m)

Why has 50 hrs on an RB become the norm before advancing deeper?

Is it purely to gain experience on the unit? I have many hours on Trimix and have been trained technical CCR from the start. What knowledge will I be gaining within the 50 hrs regarding Trimix Dils and Bailouts?

At the moment I am diving Air Dil to 40m with EAN30 and O2 as bailouts and 17/26 Heliair from 40m to 48m, with Bailouts being 20/30, 50/20 and O2. (Accelerated Deco and Counterdiffusion sorted)

So what must I learn in 50 hours that allows me to say dive 60m? (I would then switch to 14/33 HeliAir, same Bailouts 20/30, 50/20, O2)

Instructors comments welcome. :)

What wing are you using with your HH?

I started my CCR training this past weekend on a hammerhead. One of the interesting challenges was finding a wing that works. I tried a DR venture wing - nice in that it's a trapezoid with additional butt lift, but it tended to flap around a bit and also wrap around the valves I needed access to. I also tried a DR trek - which was better but the butt dump seemed to be in an awkward place - pinned between the wing and my sidemount bailout bottles, difficult to get to. It also doesn't have much lift.

I definitely want something with a medium amount of lift - not huge, not on the ragged edge of what I need. If it matters, I'm using a standard backplate. I also have a GG backplate (the oddly shaped one) but I don't think that will address my wing issues.

What's everyone using with their HH?

I have written up a in depth hands on review with images of Dive Rite's XT series wing for CCR’s in the latest issue of the Underwater Journal.

As always, Journal issues are formatted for easy viewing on either a tablet, laptop or desktop, with no zooming to read tiny type, waiting on gee-whiz interactive features that don't load, or scrolling through annoying text windows. Issues can be saved to your hard drive or to iBooks, and as always, subscriptions are free.

Header

Valued Hollis Dealer,

Hollis is pleased to announce that the Prism 2 Bail Out Valve, (BOV), item #240-6300 will be shipping the first of July. This highly sought after product will give the diver the ability to bail out to open circuit with one movement without removing the mouthpiece from their mouth.

The unique design is extremely compact and lightweight, and is neutrally buoyant in the water. It features a new lever design to control the switching between closed circuit and open circuit using a one-handed operation. This allows the switch to easily be performed in a stressful situation and will provide peace of mind for many divers.

It is rated to EN14143, the rebreather standard, EN13949, the nitrox standard and EN250, the regulator standard. It also meets the requirements of training agencies requiring the use of a Bail Out Valve.

Manufactured to the highest quality in our facility it can be fitted to existing Prism 2’s or can be ordered with a new Prism 2.

It is supplied with a high flow low pressure hose and swivel for configuration with the standard Diluent first stage on the Prism 2. The Prism 2 current DSV can be replaced with the new BOV at any Hollis Rebreather dealer.
